Steven Wingate has thirty years worth of experience as a workshop leader, solo presenter, and conference panelist. Prior to his retirement from academia, Wingate’s teaching career included stints at South Dakota State University, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and the College of the Holy Cross. He is the author of three titles in the University of Nebraska Press Flyover Fiction Series: the short story collection Mercy and Debris (2027) and the novels The Leave-Takers (2021) and Of Fathers and Fire (2019), as well as the collection Wifeshopping (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2008).
Wingate has received awards and fellowships from Gulf Coast, The Journal, Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, and Sozopol Fiction Seminars. He has presented at conferences and literary festivals in the US, Canada, England, Norway, Bulgaria, Singapore, and Hong Kong, including Oxford University and the Art/Science Museum of Singapore. He has also conducted craft workshops at venues throughout the US including Bread Loaf Writers Conference, the Lighthouse Writers Workshop in Denver, as well as multiple colleges including Augustana University, Colorado College, and the MFA programs of University of Massachusetts-Boston and McNeese State University.
Wingate’s multi-genre background allows him to discuss a wide range of literary subjects. In addition to fiction, he is prepared to talk about digital media (such as his digital memoir daddylabyrinth) and experimental prose (such as his prose poem collection Thirty-One Octets: Incantations and Meditations). Wingate’s book reviews, cultural criticism, and craft essays have appeared in Literary Hub, Los Angeles Review of Books, American Book Review, Rain Taxi Review of Books, Chicago Review of Books, and Pittsburgh Review of Books. His editorial experience includes a decade on the masthead of Fiction Writers Review and another as publisher of the Great Plains literary journal Oakwood.
